Causes of Facial Trauma

Facial trauma resulting from accidents or injuries often requires specialized surgical care. Treating facial injuries demands advanced technology, precise diagnostic tools, detailed planning, and expert knowledge due to the complexity of soft tissues and bone structures involved. These injuries not only impact a patient’s health but can also affect their appearance.

A comprehensive facial trauma treatment plan may include suturing, antibiotic therapy, and medications to manage swelling. Common causes of facial trauma we frequently treat include:

  • Sports injuries
  • Blunt force trauma to the face
  • Workplace accidents
  • Road collisions
  • Motorcycle and ATV crashes

Common Types of Fractures

Facial injuries often require surgical intervention to restore function and appearance. At Bright Smiles Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, our skilled surgeons provide comprehensive care, from emergency and acute treatment to long-term reconstruction and rehabilitation. We specialize in addressing a wide range of facial injuries, including:

Treatments

Many patients seek our help after trying all conservative treatments without success and are considering surgery as a solution. Typically, these patients have already worked with their dentist, undergoing appliance therapy, physical therapy, or both, but have not experienced relief. We begin with a comprehensive examination to assess your condition and determine the most appropriate treatment plan. The majority of TMJ cases can be managed effectively without surgery, using treatments such as muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatory medications, TMJ exercises, and a soft diet. However, if non-invasive treatments do not provide adequate relief and severe pain persists, we may recommend exploring surgical options for TMJ.
  • Facial lacerations
  • Oral lacerations
  • Avulsed (knocked-out) teeth
  • Fractured facial bones (cheek, nose, or eye socket)
  • Fractured jaws (upper and lower)
  • Dislocated jaws

Types of Facial Treatment

The treatment of facial trauma varies based on the type, location, and impact of the injury on the patient’s face. Given the sensitive nature of facial structures, these injuries are addressed with meticulous care and precision to preserve both functionality and aesthetics.

Special attention is required for the delicate facial nerves that control movement and expressions, as well as other critical structures such as salivary gland ducts in the cheeks and the mechanisms that allow eyelids to close. Every aspect is carefully considered to ensure optimal outcomes during facial trauma treatment.

  • Nasal Fractures: The nose is the most commonly fractured bone in the face due to its prominence and delicate structure. For nasal fractures, we typically refer patients to an ENT specialist for evaluation and treatment. Severe nosebleeds and swelling often accompany a broken nose. In some cases, patients may need to wait two to three days for the swelling to subside before undergoing the appropriate procedure.
The ENT specialist will assess whether the nose is crooked or if breathing is impaired when planning treatment. Nasal fracture procedures can be performed within the first week after the injury or after the nasal bones have healed, typically around three months. If treatment is not administered within the first week, rhinoplasty may be necessary for full aesthetic repair.
  • Facial Fractures: Facial fractures require tailored treatment approaches depending on the severity and location of the injury. Titanium plates, screws, or jaw wiring may be used to stabilize the fracture. Most procedures involve incisions in inconspicuous areas, such as inside the mouth or along the brow, to access the injury site while minimizing visible scarring and promoting optimal healing.
During the initial evaluation, a CT scan is performed to thoroughly assess the injury and develop a precise treatment plan. This ensures the best possible functional and aesthetic outcomes.
