Signs you may need a tooth extraction

Maintaining good oral health is essential not only for a bright smile but also for preventing the spread of oral diseases between your teeth and gums. While most people understand the importance of regular brushing and flossing, recognizing the signs of an impacted tooth that may need to be extracted is equally important. Symptoms to watch for include:
  • Overcrowded teeth that are too large or too close together to fit comfortably in your mouth
  • Severely cracked or damaged teeth
  • A diseased tooth with a damaged or infected pulp
If any of these issues arise, we’ll perform a thorough examination of your teeth and gums to determine if extraction is necessary. For an impacted tooth, we may need to remove some gum tissue to ensure proper removal. If a tooth is damaged or infected, a root canal may be required to prevent the infection from spreading to surrounding healthy teeth. Contact us today for more information.

The tooth removal process

On the day of your tooth extraction, we’ll conduct a thorough examination to ensure your mouth is prepared for the procedure, which may include an X-ray. Once your mouth is numbed and you are sedated, the oral surgeon will carefully remove the gum tissue surrounding the impacted tooth and gently extract it from your jaw. After cleaning the area, your surgeon will use gauze and likely stitch the incision closed. You should not experience any pain during the procedure, and many patients report feeling relief from the discomfort caused by the impacted tooth.

Following the extraction, you will be advised to avoid smoking, drinking alcohol, and eating solid foods for at least 24 hours. Pain medications and antibiotics may be prescribed to aid your recovery. If you experience any ongoing discomfort or bleeding, please contact us immediately for a follow-up examination.
